“But Amber, are you even aware of the complications involved in a pregnancy? This is the most crucial time for a woman. You would have to pay for regular visits to a gynecologist. You would have to go through numerous tests and endure all the complications. On top of that, you would have to deliver the baby and hand it over to somebody else. A surrogacy contract includes a clause stating that the surrogate mother and the child will never cross paths in the future. How would you do it? This isn’t easy, and it appears to be. Amber, why don’t you understand?” Julia tried her best to explain things to Amber and convince her to rethink her decision.
“I do understand your point, but this really is a big deal for me, Julia. And I would have to endure pain if I got such an offer. Nothing comes easily in life. And as far as giving the baby to somebody else is concerned, I do not want to have a child at this age. I would like to keep it thoroughly professional, and it would not have to do with my personal life. Moreover, I don’t think it is going to be that difficult for me. I can surely pull it off. From the very first day of the pregnancy, I would make it clear in my head that I have to give this baby to somebody else, and I do not possess any right over it,” Amber expressed.
“Oh, Lord… You are not getting my point, darling. I understand that you want to become a surrogate mother, but have you given thought to what would happen in your personal life after you deliver somebody else’s baby? Do you really think any guy would come up with a marriage proposal to you after knowing that you had been a surrogate mother once in your life? Would any guy accept you as his wife after the surrogacy?” Julia blurted out, using typical methods of persuasion.
Amber smiled at her friend’s orthodox reasoning and replied, “Julia, fancy words like love, affection, finding the perfect guy, and marriage do not exist in the dictionary of my life. If I go ahead with this decision, I cannot think of ever marrying anybody. And as of now, my only priority is my family and nothing else.”
“I could not let my friend willingly jump into a deep well that has no escape from it. Amber, I won’t let you take this drastic step. Please listen to me and withdraw your name,” Julia argued.
Amber did not want to argue any further with her friend. She was unable to persuade Julia as to why she had enrolled in the surrogacy procedure. She failed to let her friend understand why surrogacy was so important to her.
“Julia, I feel… You are right. Being a surrogate mother is indeed the most complicated job that I was going to sign up for. I will call the receptionist of the fertility center tomorrow and withdraw my application,” she said.
Julia was relieved that she had successfully managed to convince her best friend to opt-out of the procedure of becoming a surrogate. She embraced her in a warm hug and expressed, “Thank God you finally agreed to this. That’s like my girl.”
Amber could not sleep the whole night and kept pondering over the surrogacy thing. The deeper her thinking became, the more difficult it appeared to her. “This Sharon, your colleague, is a useless fellow. She always imprints her work on you, and you can’t deny it. And there is one thing that I don’t understand: what urgent work comes around every three weeks?” She expressed her concern.
“How does it matter to me? It might be something urgent for her. Leave all that. Could we please head towards the cafeteria? I am starving,” Amber insisted.
After their meal, both of the girls went back to their rooms and began preparing for the tests the next day. Numerous books and notes were scattered all around the bed.
The room was filled with silence until Julia popped up a question, “So… Amber… what have you thought about it?”
Amber had the habit of putting the back of a pencil in her mouth while studying. And she was doing the same while reading. Amber was shocked to hear the question that Julia had asked.
She quickly drew out the pencil from her mouth and questioned her back, “What… What are you talking about?”
“I am talking about the mail that you have received,” Julia replied.
“I would have to do this anyway. I gave it a thought and could not find any other way to meet my financial needs. And I am not that fortunate to win the lottery overnight,” Amber said.
Julia listened to her and did not utter a word after that. Both the girls got back to their preparations for the tests they had the next day.
The next day, Amber and Julia walked out of the college and appeared way more relaxed while discussing their question paper. They went to the hostel’s cafeteria and had their meal.
They were in Amber’s room for a while when Julia felt the urge to sleep and went to her room, bidding goodnight to her friend.
After her departure, Amber was checking her phone when she stumbled upon an e-mail from the fertility center. There was a link attached to it. When Amber tapped on the link, she was directed to an application form that appeared to be the longest she had ever seen. It had all the questions regarding her height and weight, and it also inquired if she had an allergy. It was also asked if she had suffered an injury before and enquired.
Chapter 4 – Visit The Center
Amber and Julia were lying on the bed on a Friday evening, listening to music.
Amber had her eyes closed while she was listening to music when she was interrupted by a phone call. It was the call from the fertility center that Amber had been waiting for.
Amber was a bit hesitant before she picked up the call. She heard a girl speaking from the other end of the phone.
“Hello, may I speak to Miss Amber?” she asked.
“Yes, this is Amber speaking,” replied Amber.
“Hey, I am Nancy from the fertility clinic. This is a call to remind you that you have to visit our clinic tomorrow at noon,” she informed her.
“Oh… Okay, this might be for my medical check-up. I will definitely show up. Could you please let me know how much time it will take to conduct all the necessary tests?” Amber questioned curiously.
Nancy calmly replied to her query, “I would not be able to tell you that, ma’am. You won’t know how time-consuming the process is until you get here tomorrow. It depends from person to person.”
Nancy did not say anything further and disconnected the call.
The last words that Amber heard over the phone left her thinking. Julia, when she stole a glance at her, realized that Amber was lost in her own world.
“Amber? What happened? Whose call was it? And why do you look so worried?” Julia questioned.
Amber had her eyes glued to her phone’s screen while she replied to the question. “Umm… Actually, a woman from the fertility center had called. She asked me to come over tomorrow around noon.”
Julia was surprised at her statement and raised a question, “she has called you to the clinic.” But why?”
“Had I not told you that I would be undergoing some medical tests if my application is accepted? I am assuming that she had called me for the same purpose,” Amber answered.
Julia’s expressions changed from calm to furious within a split second. She was worried about her best friend.
“I’m still not sure, Amber, if you should literally go ahead with this. Please, babe, you still have some time left in your hands. Withdraw your application and don’t go to the clinic for the medical examination. I’m afraid I don’t know how you’d get through it all. I mean, Amber, are you sure about it? Like cent percent sure?” Julia insisted.
“Yes, I am sure. I’ll do it. Or I would say, I have to do it,” Amber replied confidently.
She portrayed herself as confident before Julia, but she was very anxious and nervous thinking about the consequences that might follow. She was frightened by the mere thought of how she would handle it all alone.
She might have played it smart and confident, but deep down, the truth was that she was scared.
The next day was a holiday, and Amber was accustomed to waking up late in the morning on her holidays. But today was different. She could not get proper sleep last night. Her mind kept reminding her that she had to visit the fertility clinic at 12 noon.
She did not even have a proper meal as she was stressed and anxious about visiting the fertility clinic for a medical check-up.
Julia had been noticing her restlessness, and she even wanted to talk to her about the same, but stepped back. She did not find Amber in a mood to have a conversation with her.
Amber was dressing up to leave for the clinic when Julia walked into her room.
Amber was surprised to see her friend all dressed up as if she was going somewhere.
“Hey, where are you going, Julia?” Amber inquired.
Julia replied with a smile, “I am coming along with you, darling.”
Amber was startled by the sudden gesture. She inquired while combing through her hair, “What… but why? I mean, you don’t need to come along. I can manage on my own,” Amber stated.
Julia sat down on the edge of the bed and asserted, “I know you are a strong girl and you can manage everything. But still, I want to come with you, and you better not deny it.”
Amber placed the comb on the dressing table before the mirror and sat beside Julia on the bed. “Please, Julia, try and understand. I want to walk alone, all by myself, on the road that I have selected. If ever I feel the need to have you by my side, I will definitely give you a call. Trust me.”
Julia placed her palm over the back of Amber’s hand and replied, “I trust you, Amber.” It’s just that I am more concerned about you. It’s such a bold step that you have taken, my dear friend. And I don’t want you to go alone.”
Amber placed her arm around her shoulder and confessed. “I know, babe. You are worried about me and my well-being. But trust me, you need not stress over it much. I know how to take care of myself, and I will be safe. Don’t worry.”
Julia had given up till now and sighed, “Are you sure, Amber? Do you really want to go alone?”
“Yes, my friend. Of course.”
Julia positioned herself opposite Amber as she made her statement. “Now that you have made up your mind to go all by yourself, promise me that you will take care of yourself and give me a call if you need any help.”
Her words put a smile on Amber’s face.
“Yes, boss. I’ll do as you say,” Amber declared with a laugh.
Amber was aware that her best friend was concerned about her well-being, but she knew that if she accompanied her to the fertility clinic, the stress might get elevated. This was the reason why Amber refused her offer to come along.
It was 11:30 in the morning when Amber left for the clinic. At a walking distance of 5 minutes, there was a roundabout from where she boarded a bus that would take her to the fertility clinic. After a half-hour-long bus ride, Amber was standing right in front of the clinic she was asked to arrive at.
She could feel a chilling sensation within her body as she was nervous about how many and what kind of tests would be conducted inside the clinic. She had trypanophobia, which is an extreme fear of medical procedures involving injections or hypodermic needles. She was beyond frightened of the tests that were about to happen.
Amber paused for a few seconds and gathered enough courage to enter through the glass door of the fertility center. There she saw a wide and large hall, and a few cabins were situated on the right-hand side. A few couches were positioned on the left-hand side for the visitors to lounge on while they waited.
Amber went straight to the reception and inquired, “Excuse me?”
The receptionist raised her gaze and looked at Amber. She smiled and greeted her. “Oh hi, Miss Amber. You can go straight to cabin number 5. Dr. Stella is already waiting for you.”
Amber found it a little bit weird that the doctor was waiting for her to come.
“Why would a doctor wait for me?” She wondered.
Doctor Stella was the same person who had conducted the counseling session with Amber when she had visited the clinic for the first time. She was the one who convinced Amber of the surrogacy and also elaborated on the whole procedure involved.
She had explained to her how surrogacy was a noble job to perform. Dr. Stella described how a surrogate mother could help childless couples get their babies and get financial help in return.
Amber was quite impressed with Dr. Stella. She was full of compliments for her. Amber was convinced that the reason she became a surrogate mother was the conversation that she had with the doctor.
Her nervousness disappeared while she was heading towards Dr. Stella’s cabin, as the receptionist had instructed. It was room number 5 on the right-hand side. She stopped by a room where she saw a nameplate that read “Dr. Stella.”
Amber opened the door and sought her permission, “May I come in?”
Dr. Stella had been reading through a file while she was sitting at her desk. Her reading was interrupted when she heard the sound of somebody speaking to her standing at the door. She lifted her neck and glanced at Amber, who was standing at the door asking for her permission to come inside.
Her lips curled into a smile when she saw it was Amber.
“Oh… Hi Amber, please come inside.” Dr. Stella greeted her warmly.
Amber entered the room with a smile and got seated in the visitor’s chair. She was struggling hard to put a calm expression on her face, but the anxiety within her overpowered her efforts and showed up on her face.
Dr. Stella had her gaze focused on Amber since the moment she entered the cabin.
“What happened, Miss Amber? I hope you are doing well,” she interrogated.
“Yes doctor, I am fine. Thank you for your concern,” Amber answered.
Dr. Stella passed on a smile as she asked another question, “Then… are you nervous?”
Amber looked straight into her eyes and answered, “Yes doctor, I am nervous about the medical checkup that might begin in some time. I mean, I was curious about the tests and wanted to know what kind of tests would be conducted.”
Dr. Stella’s face lit up with a bright smile while she described, “You need not worry about the tests as of now. You haven’t been called for the medical checkup, Amber. So you can relax.”
Amber was surprised as her assumption proved to be wrong.
“But… Why did you call me to the clinic then?” She raised a question.
She wondered why the doctor had summoned her to the clinic if it wasn’t for medical checkups.
What could be the reason for her calling me all of a sudden? “Did my application get rejected?” Amber thought confusingly.
Chapter 5 – Stuck in a Dilemma
Amber was a bit confused and started to wonder if the application might have been rejected.
Dr. Stella closed the file and kept it aside. She placed both her hands on the table and fixed her gaze on Amber. After taking a pause for a few seconds, the doctor stated, “Miss Amber, there was something important that I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Oh… Okay, doctor. You can go ahead,” Amber replied anxiously.
Dr. Stella’s voice was coated with sweetness and affection when she spoke, “Miss Amber, I remember you mentioned during our counseling session that you have decided to become a surrogate mother to support your family in their financial crisis. Am I right?”
Amber had her fingers on both hands intertwined with each other. She was restless and lowered her gaze before answering the question, “Yes, doctor. At this point in time, my family requires financial support at the earliest.”
Dr. Stella stared at Amber through her glasses. “Don’t worry, Amber. It will all be sorted out. As you already know, I have elaborated on the procedure of surrogacy for you. And today I would like to ask you once again. Do you really want to become a surrogate mother? If you have any confusion regarding the process, you can ask me without any hesitation.”
Despite the doctor’s warning her not to hesitate, she was reluctant to put forth opinions and insecurities before her.
“No, doctor. I have understood the whole procedure, and I am prepared for it too. You are free to conduct all the required tests so that the surrogacy can be processed further. I want help as soon as possible. My family needs financial aid at the earliest,” Amber responded.
Dr. Stella took a deep breath and asserted, “Okay. I can understand. Now listen to me carefully. Amber, there’s an offer for you.”
Amber was stunned to hear the word “offer.”
“An offer? What do you mean by that, doctor?” She questioned.
Dr. Stella got up from her desk and settled down on the chair opposite Amber.
“Amber, we got an inquiry about a surrogate mother yesterday. From all the profiles that we have shortlisted for surrogate mothers, the client has chosen your profile and considered it to be the best suited for him. They want to get in touch with you. So, are you prepared for it?” Dr. Stella informed her.
Amber was surprised to know that she had just filled out the form and had received an inquiry too soon. She never thought of getting an inquiry so soon after her application was selected. The truth was that Amber was not yet ready for surrogacy.
Amber stammered a little when she replied, “w… w… What? An inquiry? But don’t you think that it is quite early?”
“Yes… Why? It should be great news for you. You would not have to wait for a long time to help your family financially. I don’t think you have any problem regarding the same,” Dr. Stella stated.
Amber could not process the sudden news that had broken out for her. She wanted to make it quick but had not expected the procedure to pace up that way.
It was more of a shock to her, and she had lost her ability to think clearly.
“But doctor, my medical check-up is due, and I haven’t completed the procedure. Then how did the client come up with the offer?” Amber inquired nervously.
“Amber, your medical check-up could be conducted later. In fact, the surrogacy procedure would not be commenced without getting your medical check-up done. However, you are fortunate to have received an offer prior to the completion of your medical test. And you know, this could be the best opportunity that you have ever gotten. I know this client on a personal level. They are one of the most affluent and genuine families in the city. All of your financial problems could be resolved if you accepted this offer. It is one of those rare chances that life gives us. Think about it, Amber. They can pay you a lot more money than you ever imagined,” Dr. Stella elaborated, trying to influence and guide Amber at the same time.
Amber was still lost in her thoughts when she nodded her head partially. She wanted some time to think over the offer and to decide whether to accept it or not.
Dr. Stella noticed her silence and asserted, “There is no need for you to panic over it. You can politely decline the offer if you don’t feel like it. But I would suggest that if you have made up your mind about surrogacy, then you should definitely accept the offer. Or else you could do one thing. You can meet the client personally and then decide whether you want to accept his offer or decline it.”
Amber was still silent. And Dr. Stella chose not to disturb her this time. Amber took almost a minute to respond. “Okay, Dr. I am ready to have a meeting with the client. Could you tell me the place and time?”
“Don’t worry, he will contact you soon,” Dr. Stella smiled and answered.
Amber stood up from the chair and questioned Dr. Stella, “Okay, doctor, I am depending on you for how to go further with this client. Anyway, you’d be there with me at the meeting when I’d be interacting with him, right?”
“No, Amber. This is bound to happen privately between both parties. It’s totally your decision about what terms and conditions you want to be formulated in the surrogacy contract. We don’t have any interference in the process. I am sorry, but you will have to meet him alone. And trust me, there won’t be any problems. This person is quite genuine,” the doctor explained.
Amber nodded her head.
“That’s okay, Dr. I will take your leave now. Bye,” Amber replied.
Dr. Stella bid her goodbye, and Amber came out of her cabin.
She could not process what was happening inside the cabin. Amber was shocked about how fast she got shortlisted and received an inquiry too. It was quite tough to believe. Was it an indication for Amber to know that the universe was guiding her towards surrogacy and this particular client?
She walked out of the center and took the subway to her hostel. While she was walking back to the hostel, her mind replayed the conversation she had with the doctor at the fertility center.
Within a few minutes, she reached the hostel and walked straight towards her room. Amber hopped onto the bed. Her mind had become tired of thinking about all the possible consequences of the surrogacy and her restlessness to meet the client. Her brain had overworked and, as a result, she dozed off to sleep within seconds.
While she was sleeping, Amber had a dream. Or one could say, a series of weird dreams. She visualized herself as a pregnant woman and also saw herself going to college with a large baby bump. She saw in her dream how people were making fun of her in college. They were raising questions about her character and cursing her.
All of a sudden, she woke up from her sleep and was drenched in sweat. She peeped out of the window and realized that it was night, and she probably had a bad dream. Stepping out of the bed, she poured some water into a glass and took a sip of it.
She felt relaxed and decided to give a call to her home. She wanted to let them know that she would soon arrange the money for her father’s surgery.
Her younger sister Lisa picked up the call, “Hello Amber. How have you been?”
“I’m good. Lisa, how are you? And what about Dad? Is he keeping well?” Amber questioned.
“His condition is quite stable, but the doctors have advised us not to delay the surgery. It may cause harm to his health. But Amber, I am afraid of how we will make this surgery happen. Mum has been crying behind our backs. Could you please come here?” Lisa elaborated sadly.
Tears fell down Amber’s cheeks while she listened to her younger sister talking about her family’s miserable condition.
“No, darling. I am sorry, but I may not come home now. But don’t worry, I will definitely arrange the money soon and then get the surgery done. Until then, please take care of mom-dad and Kevin. OK, now pass the phone to Mum. I want to speak to her,” Amber assured lovingly.

Ch 6 – MEETING WITH THE CLIENT
Amber arrived at “Hotel Empire” on time with her heart pounding in her chest. The anxiety and nervousness were palpable as she stepped out of the cab and walked into the hotel. She approached the reception desk and asked for the room number 605.
The receptionist nodded with a smile and directed her towards the elevator. Amber stepped into the elevator, feeling her palms becoming sweaty. She pressed the button for the sixth floor and the elevator doors closed. As the elevator ascended, her mind raced with thoughts about the meeting.
What if something goes wrong? What if this client is not genuine? Should I have brought someone with me for safety? These questions kept haunting her, but there was no turning back now.
When the elevator reached the sixth floor, Amber stepped out, trying to steady her nerves. She walked down the hallway, searching for room number 605. Finally, she spotted it at the far end of the hallway. Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the door.
A few moments later, the door opened, and a man in his late thirties stood before her. He had a warm smile on his face and extended his hand for a handshake.
“Hello, Miss Amber. I’m Grayson Carter,” he introduced himself.
Amber shook his hand nervously, “Hello, Mr. Carter.”
“Please, come in,” Grayson gestured, allowing her to enter the room.
As Amber stepped inside, she noticed that there was indeed a woman in the room, sitting on a sofa. She appeared to be in her early thirties and had a gentle demeanor.
“Amber, this is my wife, Emily,” Grayson introduced.
Amber greeted Emily with a nod, still feeling a bit overwhelmed by the situation.
